Check out my Wakelet collection with Online Reading Tools.

This year I decided to use ReadTheory with my students. What I like about this tool is that it personalizes reading for each student. The tool automatically recognizes the student's reading level and matches it with the appropriate text and questions. The teacher does not assign reading texts, the tool does. After students take a placement pretest, they are placed at a level and are assigned reading passages at random from within that level for the student. Students are continually challenged to improve their reading skills and move to the next reading level. Text complexity is measured with the Lexile Framework for Reading. Students can also earn knowledge points, e.g. 1 KP per question, 2 KP for a challenge question, 30 KP for getting a perfect score on a quiz, etc. KPs are solely motivational in nature and can be used to facilitate in-class competitions.

So as a teacher I don't have to spend my valuable time on trying to find appropriate reading passages for each of my students nor on grading. Isn't that awesome? All the questions are graded automatically and a detailed explanation is given to students for each wrong answer. Along with multiple choice questions, teachers can add one written response question per quiz (carefully crafted by the ReadTheory Team) so that students can write freely formed compositions which are then graded by the teacher. An assessment rubric is provided for this type of question.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgihOLrl2HUR0MDOjlGHnKf7OjVxzKPMTvRUP_94PlDmPzr9rG4qHemhT3RUz7sRA4BvgWpBmpw2mWRGmxQC7tHV0RkbBRhc6SNBRRmZy44Ar5GUpj7saD5LrJquSuilziOHbkndp_gcPs/s642/Screen+Shot+2020-09-25+at+9.36.55+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Now when schools in so many countries are closed, here is a learning menu that you can use and adapt to your context. As I wrote in this post, learning menus can be used to <span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: "roboto" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">differentiate instruction and provide students with choice. Students can decide how they will explore a concept and how they will show what they have learned.

The topic of the learning menu is tackling plastic pollution. It contains three sections - Appetizer, Main Course and Desert, each consisting of three tasks.

The tasks in the Appetizer section are compulsory - students have to complete all of them. In the Main Course section students can choose one task they want to work on. The Desert section is optional, however, the activities in this section are simply irresistible and students will most likely be happy to do them.

You can download this learning menu here.
In most of my technology training workshops there are teachers of different levels of digital competence and it's difficult to find activities that would suit individual needs of each participant. Not only our instruction needs to be differentiated but also teacher professional development shouldn't follow the one-size-doesn't-fit-all approach. So I came up with an idea to use choice boards for teacher PD.

Choice boards are are used to differentiate instruction and boost student engagement because they allow students to decide how they will learn a concept and how they will show what they have learned. (Read more about using choice boards in the classroom below.)

TIC-TAC-TOE CHOICE BOARD

Choice boards are in fact graphic organizers that come in different shapes and sizes with Tic-Tac-Toe format being one of the most common. As in the popular game, the task is to choose and complete three activities in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

Here's an example technology training choice board that you can do online and at your own pace. No matter which row you choose, you will always do activities from three different activities, e.g. to build your collaboration skills, assessment, content creation or classroom management. You can also do a free choice activity. Click here to download the Choice Board.

You are very welcome to share the result of your activities on this Padlet: Choice Board for Teacher CPD.

LEARNING MENU

Choice boards can also be designed in a form of a menu. In my Technology Learning Menu you must choose one appetizer, one first course, one main course and some wine too. Dessert is optional, but as it is often the case, it is irresistibly delicious so leave some room for it too. Of course, feel free to have more of everything. Click here to download my Tech Learning Menu.
In my last year's reflection I wrote about career change and imagine what! I have a new job!

The Proposal for a Council Recommendation on Key Competences for Lifelong Learning has now been published. It repeals and replaces the 2006 Recommendation. So what's new? What are the competences European citizens need to acquire? Some have been slightly updated, while others have undergone significant changes.

There's is also a significant change of terminology: it is recommended that DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES be used instead of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and IST (Information Society Technology) because "it is considered the most appropriate term to refer to the full range of devices, software or infrastructure. With the increased, varied and embedded use of mobile devices and applications, references to 'computers' and 'the Internet' are removed, but are still classed under the broad term of digital technologies." I think it really hits the mark.

The Proposal lists the following 8 competences along with explanations:

LITERACY COMPETENCE - "can be developed in the mother tongue, in the language of schooling, and/or in the official language of the country. The key element is that a good level of literacy needs to be ensured in at least one of these languages to allow for further competences development."

LANGUAGES COMPETENCE - "focus is on helping people to communicate across borders, to make use of mobility within Europe and in a globalized economy."

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGICAL ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICAL COMPETENCE - as in 2006, "with their emphasis on critical questioning and problem solving, they are prerequisite for the functioning of technologically advanced, knowledge based societies and economies. This new title strengthens the understanding of science as a process and way of thinking and includes a reference to the increasing need of financial literacy."

DIGITAL COMPETENCE - is aligned with the Digital Competence Framework (2013), which includes 5 areas: (1) Information and data literacy, including management of content, (2) Communication and collaboration and participation in society, (3) Digital content creation, including ethical principles, (4) Safety and (5) Problem solving. The description of this competence "should try to be significantly flexible to be relevant in today's society and in the future, recognising the embedding of social media and the emergence of new technologies, such as Artificial intelligence, robots, virtual and augmented reality." (How great is this part that I underlined!)

PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND LEARNING COMPETENCE - "includes three specific aspects:
- personal - including self-awareness, physical and mental well-being
- social - covering interpersonal interactions and working with others
- learning - focus on lifelong learning strategies and career management skills.
It also addresses a number of transversal skills from the 2006 Framework (creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, decision taking, self-regulation,...) as well as some new ones, such as resilience, ability to deal with uncertainty and complexity.

CIVIC COMPETENCE - "includes active citizenship, participation, involvement and building a sustainable future and further highlights the role of citizenship, democratic values and human rights in today's increasingly connected global societies. Understanding the need to support sustainable societies, economies and ecosystems, as well as practice sustainable lifestyles is a key element of this competence."

ENTREPRENEURSHIP COMPETENCE - "is aligned with the JRC Entrepreneurship Competence Framework. In addition, creativity and the ability to plan and manage processes are highlighted as essential dimensions of an entrepreneurial mindset.

CULTURAL AWARENESS AND EXPRESSION COMPETENCE - "takes into account a wider range of contemporary forms of cultural expressions and also to more clearly describe how this competence is a crucial element in understanding, developing and expressing ideas and one's place or role in society, or in other words, being able to view and shape the world with a sense of identity that is constructed in relation to others. Positive and open-minded attitudes towards other cultures and cultural differences are highlighted.

Jane Hart recently shared her Modern Professional Learner's Toolkit, based on the Top 100 Tools for Personal & Professional Learning 2017.

Inspired by Jane Hart, I created my own Professional Learner's Toolkit:

FAVORITE WEB BROWSER: Safari is my all time favorite, but I also use Chrome, because of some features that Safari doesn't support - yet (e.g. new Google Sites)

FAVORITE SEARCH ENGINE: Google search - despite its algorithms, it's still my number one, using search operators helps a lot.

TRUSTED WEB RESOURCES: BBC for European News, New York Times and Washington Post for world news and Google Scholar for scholarly literature.

NEWS & CURATION TOOLS: Feedly is my favorite RSS and I try to check it on a daily basis, but it can happen that days go by and I don't have time to look at my feed. Pinterest is still my number one curation tool, despite its being closed to those who don't own an account with it.

FAVORITE WEB COURSE PLATFORM: Coursera, but I don't use it as much as I would like to! Actually, I use European Schoolnet course platforms much more frequently than Coursera, because its MOOCs are more specifically targeted at the teacher population: Teacher Academy and European Schoolnet Academy. (Don't ask what the difference between the two of them is - I thought I knew, but I don't, however, it really doesn't matter because both offer excellent learning opportunities and I highly recommend both.)

SOCIAL NETWORKS: Twitter, without a doubt! Almost 9 years on and it's still going strong for my professional development, definitely a tool that I couldn't live without! Facebook is my second fave and I admit, I'm addicted to it, not only because of chats with friends and colleagues, but because of all the sharing and learning. LinkedIn has become more important and more present in my professional social networking life.

PERSONAL INFORMATION SYSTEM: I don't have any - I used to have Evernote, but I stopped using when they announced that the free version will be available on two devices only. OK, two devices is enough, but I don't like limitations.

BLOGGING OR A WEBSITE TOOL: Blogger for more than 10 years and I still like it, but I also like WordPress for its sleek design and ease of use. I've experimented with lots of blogging tools, but these two are definitely the best. OK, maybe Wordpress is a tad better!

PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS AND APPS: Google Calendar is a tool I use on a daily basis. I also experimented with Trello and Slack, but they didn't stick.

PREFERRED OFFICE SUITE: Google Docs/Sheets/Slides without a doubt. Easy, fast, free and most importantly collaborative!

COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION TOOLS: Google Drive, WhatsApp, Adobe Connect Pro Meeting and Skype. I'm a collaborator at heart! I collaborate with my colleagues with pleasure (and I hope they like working together with me). The tools I use to collaborate don't matter so much, the most important is that we do IT together!

SMART DEVICE: iPhone forever! My iphone 5 is now 5 years old! It's still working very well, but it's slowly telling me I need a new device. Turning off the volume stopped functioning recently, so my phone went off in the classroom - which of course was embarrassing, so a new iPhone is on the horizon for 2018.

Back in 2014, while I was on my Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship at the Pennsylvania State University, my apartment in Cunningham Hall was the place where the Humphrey Fellows met every week. There we talked about serious and less serious matters, we laughed a lot and cried a little, and we dreamed big and small. One of our dreams was to write a research paper and have it published by a renowned publishing company.

And yesterday my dream arrived per mail! A paper that I co-wrote with my colleague and best friend Bart Verswijvel, was published by Routledge. Bart and I were invited to contribute to the book International Handbook of Teacher Quality and Policy by Dr. Gerard LeTendre and Dr. Motoko Akiba.

In 2014, I met Dr. LeTendre at the Humphrey Fellows Welcome Reception. We talked about education and I mentioned eTwinning. He was amazed to hear about this unique community of European teachers and wanted to learn more so he invited Bart and me to talk about it to the Teacher Leadership Faculty at Penn State. One thing led to another and so we wrote a chapter about eTwinning and teacher professional development for Dr. LeTendre's book.

Our chapter is about an online teacher training course that we designed and facilitated in spring 2015. We present one of the possible scenarios for professional development offered to eTwinning teachers. In the course we introduced teachers to strategies for practical implementation of emerging technologies, in particular augmented reality, in teaching and learning.
I'm delighted to take part in a global project empowering students to address climate change. Climate Action involves more than 250 schools from 64 countries. Students in these schools will work together to raise awareness and to find ways how to tackle the issue of climate change.

So far I have launched or participated in a number of international projects on such a large scale, (e.g. my award-winning project Greetings from the world involved 27 schools from all the 6 continents), and in all my projects I encouraged my students to come up with their own ideas. Still, I was there, their guide by the side, directing them in the way I thought was the right way!

However, in the Climate Action Project, we teachers intend to get out of their way completely - we want our students to have their say in all the stages of the project. My plan is to make myself invisible and let my students be responsible for their learning and take ownership of the project and its outcomes. During the 4-week project I will not prepare any lesson plans, but instead I'll let them organize the lessons any way the want. Teaching less and learning more, that's my goal. Yes, indeed, this means getting out of our comfort zone, but of course, I'll be there for them all the time. We'll extend our class time in OneNote so that we're connected whenever necessary. We'll also be connected via OneNote with other students and award-winning educators who are taking part in this project.

Climate Action project is the brainchild of Koen Timmers, a Belgian teacher who was a top 50 finalist for the Global Teacher Prize. His last undertaking, the Human Differences project, provided students with the opportunity to address the walls, both real and metaphorical ones, that divide us.

Here is the list of all the schools and teachers taking part in this international project.
I just noticed that I've been blogging for 10 years and 6 months! I forgot to mark the 10th anniversary, but it's never too late to do so. Some stats:
I've written 334 blog posts, received 371 comments, my blog has been visited 134,121 times, I have 58 followers, most of my readers come from the US.
I've written about traveling quite a lot, both as a tourist and as a teacher traveling for educational purposes (conferences, school exchange visits, etc.) and also about teaching with technology. I don't know how many miles I've traveled, maybe there's an app for that!

My most visited post is First lesson, new students and no computers, followed by Tech Tools To Boost Verbal Thinking. My least visited post, with only one view is Easter Sunday in Galway (I still think it's a well-written post about a beautiful Irish city).

When I started this blog I used Picassa for sharing photos, but as Google discontinued this service my photos in my blog posts can't be accessed anymore. But they are not lost, they are still online in Google's Album Archive. Hopefully one day I'll have more time to update all the broken links.

Over the past 10 years I blogged more or less frequently, sometimes 19 times in a month, then nothing at all for months. However, being curious as I am, and eager to play with other blogging options, I've also blogged on other platforms, for different reasons and purposes: Wordpress: here, here, here and even here, Adobe Spark, Jimdo, Tumblr here and here, also another Blogger here. But Traveloteacher was my first blog and I've always come back to it. So happy anniversary, dear Traveloteacher diary.
When you work hard, you work and work and all it results in is failure after failure, and you look back and try to improve and make it better and work again and work and work and nothing but failure comes out of all this hard work, how do you get up and keep going? How do you gain the strength to overcome your failures? Where do you find determination not to give up? How much grit does it take to succeed? How do you know that there is success at the end of the tunnel filled with failures? What if success happens to other people, what if it will never come to you, no matter how hard you work? How do you know when the time is right to turn over a new leaf? How do you know when to stop following your dreams? How do you know that your dreams are too big to fulfill?

Lumen5 is an amazing user-friendly app that turns a blog post or an article into a video! All you have to do is copy paste the link to the blog post and Lumen5's Artificial Intelligence will automatically create a storyboard for the video. If you don't like how "Natural Processing Algorithms" have shaped up your story, you can easily edit it any way you want.
The next step that AI performs is choosing the appropriate audiovisuals from a huge library of copyright free videos, photos and audio clips. If you're not happy with AI's choices, no problem, because you can upload your own visuals. Before you publish the video you can add your logo and your watermark if you want to. The video can be published directly on Facebook or it can be downloaded as an mp4. file. Here's my first video that I created very quickly, it took me about half an hour to turn one of my blog posts into a video in the way I liked it.

Lumen5 offers a free plan with an unlimited number of videos, somewhat lower video resolution and a subtle Lumen5 logo that appears in the video.

I learned about Lumen5 in this excellent post on Nik's Quickshout: 10 Free Apps to Enhance your Students' Learning.
It's been a huge honor and privilege for me to serve on the Expert Panel of the NMC/CoSN Horizon Report for two years in a row and to examine applications and manifestations of trends, challenges and technology developments. This year, the Panel was composed of 61 education and technology experts representing 20 countries across 6 continents. The Report can be downloaded here. The NMC/CoSN Horizon Report: 2017 K-12 Edition was produced by the New Media Consortium in collaboration with the Consortium for School Networking and made possible by mindSpark Learning.

The expert panel examined an extensive set of background materials that identified and documented a range of existing technologies and proposed new topics and technologies that are relevant for teaching, learning and creative inquiry in K-12 education. The final topics selected by the panel are detailed in the Report.
When I first came up with this idea to organize a slow Twitter chat that would last for five full days, 24 hours a day, at a time when most teachers from European schools are still on holidays, I had absolutely no clue how it would go! But I liked the idea and proposed it to Irene Pateraki, eTwinning CSS Pedagogical and Monitoring Manager, who gave me her full support.

Two weeks ago the word slowetwiam didn't exist. Now, it is a lively buzzword that has attracted teachers from Europe and beyond to learning and sharing on Twitter.

More than 1,000 tweets, retweets and replies have been sent out by 90 teachers over the past 5 days! Some teachers actively participated from the beginning to the very end, while others chimed in whenever they could. Our tweets have been delivered to Twitter timelines more than 2,283,000 times!

We had our ups and downs during the chat:

We discussed five topics and inspired each other with so many great ideas.

At the end of this incredible event, I'm tremendously proud that #slowetwiam has been so successful. And yes, it might have been slow in that it lasted for full 5 days, but it was very very intense, passionate, warm, heartfelt .... and fast and furious, just the way I like it!

"Computational thinking is a way humans solve problems; it is not trying to get humans to think like computers. Computers are dull and boring; humans are clever and imaginative. Equipped with computing devices, we use our cleverness to tackle problems we would not dare take on before computing and build systems with functionality limited only by our imaginations."

According to J. Wing, this is one of the characteristic of computational thinking. To me, this is what makes computational thinking so tremendously exciting: combining computing with imagination and knowing that the sky is the limit.

We don't need to be rocket scientists to understand and teach computational thinking. Check out my posts about how to teach computational thinking with tech tools.
Algorithm design, the fourth and final element of computational thinking, may seem like rocket science to educators who have only a vague idea of what an algorithm is, let alone design it! Or teach it!

But fear not! You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand and design algorithms - and then teach algorithm design to your students! Because computational thinking is much less computational (rocket and computer scientists, please don't get me wrong!) and much more thinking! And when I say thinking, I mean using our brain - not only the left, but also the right side, to solve problems. Because we need logic AND creativity to come up with innovative solutions.

In fact, we already ARE teaching computational thinking to our students. Their computational thinking skills are being developed whenever they work out a rule, determine a principle underlying a process, and create a tutorial or a step by step guide to solving problems. Or when they are learning programming and coding, of course.

There are a lot of tech tools for the above-mentioned activities. For teaching coding there are really many tools that are used in the classrooms all over the world. Check out this excellent guide by Common sense education: Get started with coding in the classroom. This hyperdoc by Mark Herring is a also a good way to Get Your Students Coding - From Basics To Advanced.
There is myriad of tools for creating tutorials and instructional and explainer videos. Or why not start with creating animated explainer GIFs. Here's a step by step guide that will teach you and your students how to make an explainer GIF by Common Craft: How To Make Explainer GIFs.

Or why not ask your students to do a webquest - an inquiry-based learning activity. Create your own or use a webquest created by teachers of different subjects, in different languages. Check out these two easy and user-friendly websites: WebQuest and Zunal.

I just stumbled upon Novel Engineering - an innovative approach to integrate engineering and literacy in elementary and middle school. Students read a book, identify problems that characters face, brainstorm possible solutions and design a prototype to help the characters solve a problem.

Abstraction is the third element of computational thinking. Abstract reasoning or abstract thinking refers to the ability to identify and analyze general principles that generate the patterns we previously detected.

In activities that require abstract reasoning students are asked to interpret, analyze and evaluate information or ideas, connect the "dots", form and explain viewpoints, and draw reasonable conclusions.

There are many activities and tools that we can use with students to develop their abstract thinking skills. They can play games, take part in debates or solve puzzles and riddles.

To create puzzles, cryptograms, riddles and rebuses, you can use Discovery Education Puzzlemaker, Cryptoclub, Rebus Generator or Riddle Generator. These tools are especially useful for online scavenger hunts.

Scavenger hunts are great to boost students abstract thinking skills. A scavenger hunt is a game that consists of a number of different types of tasks or activities. Students work collaboratively to find clues, (e.g. decrypt a code, do a jigsaw puzzle, find a location on a map or simply answer a question) to complete the game. There is also a treasure hunt variation in which a hidden treasure needs to be found online.

To see what a scavenger hunt looks like, do this one that I created for my teacher training workshop in Munich: Let's go to Munich.
Another variation of Scavenger Hunt is Escape Classroom or Classroom Breakout. Students are "locked" in the classroom - well, they are not really locked, but we just pretend that they are. We tell them they can escape from the classroom only after they open the locked boxes that contain a series of challenging puzzles. I highly recommend checking out Breakout.EDU, a fantastic resource with games for students of all ages created by teachers of different subjects. It is free to use, but you have to register to get the password.

If you don't want real locks and boxes, you can go digital with Breakout.Edu Digital. There are a lot of games that you can use in your classroom or you can create your own breakout games. Check out a breakout that I created for my students: 3rd Grade Breakout.

Last but not least, Six Thinking Hats by Edward de Bono is a great activity to boost abstract thinking, to identify and and to connect six different perspective on a problem. Divide students in 6 groups and give each group a coloured hat (paper hats are great). Each group can use a notepad for their ideas, such as Titanpad or Google Doc. This is what the hats represent:

The white hat helps us define the reality. It is all about facts.

The black hat shows the negative sides of the problem and emphasizes difficulties and dangers.

The yellow hat helps us find the good sides of the problems. It symbolizes optimism and a positive attitude.

The red hat shows our emotions and feelings, hopes and fears.

The green hat focuses on creativity and lets our imagination run wild.

The blue hat controls the thinking process and makes sure that we see all the different perspectives. When we put all the six hats together, we come up with a powerful team approach to solving problems.

After visualizing and verbalizing problems, students can now proceed to the second stage of computational thinking: recognizing patterns, detecting trends and finding regularities in data. They can use graphic organizers to identify relationships between objects, connect and classify information and recognize patterns.

Here are some tools and websites where you can find free printable graphic organizers:

On this site you can find a very easy-to-use Venn Diagram Maker. Gliffy and Lucidchart that I mentioned in my post on verbal thinking can also be used to create Venn diagrams to indicate which elements are common and which are unique in a list of things.

On ReadWriteThink there are a lot of useful graphic organizers, such as

If you are ecologically conscious and want to use interactive graphic organizers, you can use Lino and create your own organizer. Make sure that all the stickies posted by students are visible. Here's a sample Lino Board that you can play with.

Padlet now offers an interactive KWL chart. In my opinion this is the best interactive KWL to be found online. Check it out below: Feel free to add your thoughts and ideas to both Padlet and Lino.
Twitter chats represent an excellent opportunity for professional development.

A Twitter chat is an online conversation about a specific topic. It usually lasts for an hour during which a facilitator tweets out questions. There are usually up to 6 questions posted during a Twitter chat. The participants send out tweets, retweet other participants' tweets and reply to them to make the conversation lively and diverse. While sharing their ideas, experiences, examples of best practice, as well as links to interesting and useful websites, they use a predetermined hashtag (#) to make it easier to follow the chat, because Twitter chats are usually "fast and furious".

So far I've facilitated a number of an-hour-long "fast and furious" Twitter chats for eTwinning teachers. In such chats, there are sometimes a lot of tweets sent out at the same time, which makes it difficult to follow. That's why I decided to do a completely different Twitter chat - a SLOW one. I found out about slow Twitter chats on the New Zealand's MoE's Virtual learning network website and thought it might be a great idea to do it for European teachers within the eTwinning community and by doing so, involve even more teachers in professional development opportunities on Twitter. In a slow Twitter chat you can tweet anytime, day or night! You have all day to tweet, retweet and reply to colleagues.

In the week of August 21 -25, I'll be moderating a slow Twitter chat. Every day a new question will be posted. The questions will focus on innovation, creativity, project design, computational thinking and the use of new web 2.0 tools in eTwinning projects.

Everyone is very welcome to the chat! To join, just add the hashtag #slowetwiam to your tweets!

I'd also like to share with you some tips on how to easily follow all the tweets sent out by chat participants:

I highly recommend using Tweetdeck, a Twitter management client, because it helps us organize tweets in a way that is easy to follow. Tweeting from Tweetdeck during a chat (and not only during a chat, but any time you want to see what's going on in the Twitterverse) makes it extremely easy to follow the tweets.

Tech tools for problem finding? Seriously? Don't we have enough problems anyway?

Of course we do, but problems urge us - and inspire us - to come up with innovative solutions. Problem finding is one of the key components of computational thinking.

In the classroom students are usually given a problem or a challenge that they have to solve to show their learning and they usually do it in the way we want them to do it, e.g. answer a question, create a comic book, do an experiment. Why not add a bit of unpredictability or randomness to the problems and the way they can be solved? This will make students much more engaged in performing "unexpected" and randomly assigned tasks and activities to present their learning. To do this you can use tools known as learning event generators.

Learning Event Generator - LEG is a tool created by John Davitt. It functions so that it randomly generates problems (DO) as well as different options or ways how to solve that problem (AS), for example:

DO: The parts of speech AS: A finger puppet show
DO: Explain the concept of gravity AS: A food advertisement
DO: The plot of Hamlet AS: A rap song

The main idea behind the LEG is for students to show that they have mastered a concept.

You can get LEG on App store for 1 EUR only. Or you can use Davitt's 200 ways to know - Another Difference Engine for free. This tool is similar to LEG. The only difference is that you type in the problem in the DO section, whereas the activities in the AS section are already provided and you can't change them or add new ones. There are 200 activities that the generator can choose from.

To get inspired, please check out John Davitt's wiki pages with possible DO tasks/ problems and AS activities.

You can also use this great Random Activity Generator in the form of an Excel Workbook created by Richard Clarke on TES. This is a math resource, but you can easily adapt it to your teaching context. Download the Workbook and type as many DOs as you want in one sheet, then add as many ASs in the other. The generator will randomly combine DOs and ASs and make learning unpredictable, different and fun.

Learning Task Generator by Paul Collins, also on TES, is free to download as a PowerPoint presentation. There are 50 different tasks that students can do. You can add slides with more activities. In the classroom just start the slideshow and ask students to say when to pause the slideshow to get their problem and the activity to solve it.

Primary Science Think Bank is an online learning activity generator that includes over 3,600 different learning activities for primary science lessons.

I sometimes use Brainsparker with my students. It's a free creativity app with more than 200 creative prompts to inspire creativity and innovative ideas. It is available for iOS and Android.
In my recent post from the series on Teaching Computational Thinking, I shared some web 2.0 tools to boost student visual thinking skills. In this post I'm sharing some tools for enhancing verbal thinking skills.

However, it is important to understand that verbal thinking skills should and could by no means be separated from visual thinking skills. They do not exclude each other; quite to the contrary, they are closely interwoven. "They coexist in every mind, and creative impulses emerge when they interact. (Otis, 2016).

According to Repenning et. al (2016), informal doodling on napkins is an excellent example of verbal thinking. But doodling can also include visual elements, just like sketchnoting, a combination of verbal and visual thinking. Besides doodling and sketchnoting, students can use sticky notes to break down information, they can identify problems by writing a storyboard or they can create timelines to verbally organize information. Here are some web tools to boost verbal (and also visual) thinking skills.

DOODLING AND SKETCHNOTING

Awwapp is a web whiteboard for drawing sketches and text and for collaborating with others. It can be used on computer, tablet or smartphone. The board can be shared and downloaded as an image.

As described in a previous post the first stage of computational thinking is decomposition, or breaking down data, procesess and problems into manageable parts. This first stage of computational thinking is also known as problem formulation and it includes problem finding (Repenning et al., 2016). Both problem finding and problem formulation are crucial for computational thinking, because if we want to come up with innovative and creative solutions, we first need to identify the problem to decompose it – to break it down into smaller parts in order to create innovative solutions.

Decomposition can be performed through visual and verbal thinking. Visual and verbal thinking help us conceptualize problems visually and verbally. Mindmaps, diagrams, spreadsheets and simulations can be used to boost visual thinking. They help students visualize problems and visually organize information. Informal doodling on napkins is an excellent example of verbal thinking. To boost verbal thinking skills, we can also use storyboarding, timelines and sticky notes.

There are many web 2.0 tools that can help students develop their visual thinking skills. Here are some of them:
